Jhelum District is in the Punjab (Province) of Pakistan which is dated back to BC. According the 1998 census the district had a population of 936,957, of which 31.48% were urban.
The district of Jhelum stretches from the river Jhelum almost to the Indus. Salt is quarried at the Mayo mine in the Salt Range. There are many coal-mines, from which the North-Western railway obtains part of its supply of coal. Before splitting of Chakwal from district Jhelum it was one of the biggest and most affective districts of Pakistan with natural minerals and largest factories like Cigerate factories etc in it.
The chief centre of the salt trade is Pind Dadan Khan. The district is crossed by the main line of the North-Western railway, and also traversed along the south by a branch line. It is located in the north of the Punjab province, Jhelum district is bordered by Sargodha to its south, Gujrat and the Jhelum River to its south and east, Chakwal to its west, Mirpur to its east, and Rawalpindi to its north.
Jhelum District is divided into 4 major sub-divisions also called (Tehsils) :-
- Jhelum (Head Quarters)
- Pind Dadan Khan
- Sohawa
- Dina
Jhelum (Tehsil)
Jhelum Tehsil is the headquarters of the whole district and all district level officials sit here. From DCO to DPO and all executive District officers of all government department have offices and residencies here. District courts and lawyer benches are also here in district Kachehry (COURTS) Jhelum.
Pind Dadan Khan (Tehsil)
Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil is a subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan. It is headquartered at the town of Pind Dadan Khan located on the bank of River Jhelum, about 28 kilometres from the M2 motorway.
The area is well known for Khewra Salt Mines, Asia's largest salt mine, in use for over 2000 years, and which features an underground mosque. The area has a long history going back to the time of Alexander the Great's invasion (see Punjab (Pakistan)). The small town of Jalalpur Sharif is located in Pind Dadan Khan and is said to be where Alexander the Great's famous horse, Bucephalus is buried.
This pind (from Punjabi word for village), is named after Nawab Dadan Khan, the Muslim Governor of Lahore in the 1700s.
Sohawa (Tehsil)
Sohawa is an administrative sub-division (tehsil) of Jhelum District, situated in the Punjab province of Pakistan.It is located in north-western part of the district. One sign of Sohawa is the toll plaza by the name of 'Tarakki' on the Grand Trunk Road. The main bazaar of Sohawa attracts people from nearby villages.
Dina (Tehsil)
Dina City is a rapidly expanding commercial town and tehsil of Jhelum District of the province of Punjab, Pakistan. It is about 10 miles northwest of Jhelum City, where there is a junction with the road to the Mangla Dam and Rohtas Fort.
The historic Grand Trunk Road passes through the centre of the town. A small industry exists in the city including wood industry, iron industry and marble industry outside from the city.
The main source of income of residents of city is foreign income. As a large number of citizens of city are settled in abroad. It is estimated that about 60 percent of people are in foreign counties.Second main source of income is jobs in Pakistan Military. The source of income in surrounding villages is agriculture.
